Randaidh (Gil) Waugh was born into a family of strong Scottish cultural pride on both sides. On one side, Lowlanders, and on the other Highlanders. On the Highland side, Gaelic was always present, but veiled, and not considered valuable enough to pass along. In contrast, on the Lowland side, a strong national pride and music was always present, but with a disconnect to the Highland side. When Randaidh's first child was born, a switch was flipped inside, and the culture he had suppressed was released. Indeed, aspects he had not understood about his family, his culture, and himself, finally started to come into focus. Randaidh has studied Gaelic under the tutelage of Dùghlas MacFhearchair (Douglas McKercher), the late Gobnait Nic Fhilib (Deborah White), Atlantic Gaelic Academy with Gaelic musician Anndra MacPhaidein (Andrew McFayden), most recently with Cape Breton actor Angus MacLeod, and will continue his studies Gaelic studies in 2010 with Sabhal Mòr Ostaig headquartered on the Isle of Skye. Randaidh is an accomplished musician who was classically trained on trumpet when yet a wee lad, played electric bass as a touring rock musician, and learned Celtic whistle, flute, the great Highland bagpipe and small pipes to feel more grounded in his culture. Randaidh formed and incorporated Comunn Gàidhlig Ottawa in the spring of 2009 to help bring Gaelic speakers and learners together to join forces and progress together in their journey toward fluency. He also formed Ar n-Òran, Comunn Gàidhlig Ottawa’s Gaelic choir early in July 2009, and after expanding his board of directors, started organizing the first National Capital Mòd. The Mòd is designed to be a premier Scottish Gaelic cultural event inclusive of other Gaelic national cultures that promotes and shares our colorful and diverse heritage through competition meant also to be entertaining. Randaidh has two published novels written under his pen-name, Gil Waugh, has trained as a commercial pilot, worked as a Private Investigator, is avidly interested in cognitive science using neural network applications and for many years now has designed, secured and maintained corporate networks.
